Malta's fertility rate fell to a record 1.01 children per woman in 2024, remaining the lowest in the European Union for the eighth consecutive year, compared with an EU average of 1.34. Both these figures are much lower than the 2.1 replacement level (the average number of children needed for a generation to replace itself without migration).
